Day Hiking Checklist

Day Hiking Checklist

Recently, I saw an interesting Infographic on the Trail Sherpa blog that was called The Badass Dayhiker’s Checklist. After reading the Infographic, I had two thoughts:

  • 1) It’s an excellent start at a checklist for day hikers, and
  • 2) Everyone should have their own personalized list.

While it’s great to get suggestions and ideas from a wide variety of sources (including Trail Sherpa and FarmerDiddley.com :-)) you should really create a list that incorporates your own needs, preferences, and style.

Epic Hike Becomes Epic Fail

Long Trail

As I discussed in my previous post Preparing for a Long Distance Hike, the preparations that my son and I completed for our planned thru-hike of the Vermont Long Trail in the summer of 2012 went extremely well. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for the hike itself.

Preparing for a Long Distance Hike

Prospect Rock, Vermont Long Trail

The Long Trail was the first long-distance hiking trail in the United States, and it spans the high peaks of the Green Mountains through Vermont from the Massachusetts state line to the Canadian border. We started planning for this trip about 18 months before our journey.

GoRuck GR1 Rucksack Review

GoRuck GR1
In May of 2012 I bought a GoRuck GR1 Rucksack and it has turned out to be one of the best outdoor gear purchases that I have ever made.  I absolutely love this pack!  I use this ruck for so many different purposes.  It serves as my EDC bag, as a pack for day-hikes, as well as the only bag I use on week-long business trips… and it’s “carry-on” size means I don’t have to check any luggage when I fly… how sweet is that???

Welcome to Farmer Diddley’s World

View from Farmer Diddley's cabin
About me
Hello!  I’m Farmer Diddley.  Welcome to Farmer Diddley’s World!  My real name is Steve.  I’m 46 years old, and I’ve been an outdoor enthusiast my entire life.  My favorite outdoor activities are hiking, camping, kayaking, sailing, snowshoeing, fishing, survival skills, etc.  I have a one-room cabin, off the grid, on a lake in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.  Almost every family vacation from the time I was born until I went off to college was spent at that cabin.  My experiences on and around the lake had a profound affect on who I am.  Today, I live with my wife and three kids in Vermont.  I spend as much time as possible hiking the Green Mountains, and sailing and kayaking on Lake Champlain…  and my cabin is just a few hours from where I live.
